Newark
Produced with assistance from Spark Media, Inc.

Newark, New Jersey is the kind of town that needs to stay in fighting shape. Sparring with headlines ranging from the good to the bad to the very, very ugly, the city has had its share of questionable calls. Under the proactive governance of 38-year-old mayor-elect Corey Booker (only the third man to run the city since 1970), Newark has had to contend with, most recently, the explosive case of four college students killed execution-style by illegal immigrants. Still, the soul of the third oldest city in the country rises above the detritus and emerges through residents like poet/activist Amiri Baraka and small business owners from the city’s five wards.

This video travelogue, sponsored by the National Black Programming Consortium, chronicles the communities that support the dreams and endeavors of every citizen who calls this city home.
