To answer your second question: Yes, there are robots, though not as many as you might imagine. The emphasis here is the direct to consumer market, not just pure innovation. Robotics are now taking the form of adult Legos, with companies offering erector sets of robot parts for do-it-yourselfers. This one is from Roboware.

Hand grenades? No, something else you absolutely don’t need. It’s Rolli, a dancing (yes, dancing) MP3 player from Sony. Basically it’s the musical equivalent of Tickle Me Elmo. It rolls , spins and the speakers flap like ears, kinda like that Miles Davis looking thing in the movie Gremlins. Presumably you can make it stop. But hey, gadgets aren’t about need - it’s all about fun, right?
