ReThink
at home with Sammy

We found these pics in an issue dating back to December 1964. While most may be laughable, we remember that for its time, Sammy Davis Jr.’s pad was just as hip as he was. Here, famed interior designer Sheila Bridges shows us how she would bring the great entertainer into the new millennium.
There is no question in my mind that Sammy was definitely a “cool cat” when it came to his design style. This home was TOTALLY hip and forward. It’s very 60s and very cutting edge from a design standpoint. While I love the modern architecture and could definitely live in this house, I would have to   make a few major changes before I could move in – the biggest being that Formica kitchen.

1. I can’t tell what color it is in the photos but chances are it was something like avocado green or tan (no, thank you). That would call for a complete renovation in my estimation. Nowadays we prefer using marble or granite counters and ceramic tile backsplashes as well as wood cabinets.

2. The master bedroom uses huge pieces of angular furniture. The bed is attached to the cabinet, headboard and night tables. This definitely is out of style now as most people prefer to use individual pieces of furniture in their bedrooms – even if all the pieces match. The satiny bedspread would be replaced by Egyptian cotton sheets, a cotton coverlet and a down quilt with a duvet cover.
