Mandela’s Birthday Bash

Though Nelson Mandela officially celebrates his 90th birthday on July 18, celebrities from around the globe converged in London’s Hyde Park for an enormous outdoor concert to salute the former South African president and statesman as he enters his ninth decade. Hosted by actors Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith, the concert and a special dinner were attended by a galaxy of international stars including Oprah Winfrey, Denzel and Pauletta Washington, Leona Lewis, Quincy Jones, Eddy Grant, Joan Baez and Annie Lennox. The event also was a fundraiser for Mandela’s AIDS charity 46664. The charity is named for the number Mandela wore while in prison during his long struggle to end apartheid in South Africa.

Battling Black Amputations

Blacks receive leg amputations at a rate four times higher than Whites, according to a recent study of Medicare recipients. The surgeries were performed because of  complications from the ravages of diabetes and vascular disease, but the real tragedy is that the illnesses are preventable. According to noted endocrinologist and diabetologist Dr. Jerome Tolbert, Blacks who follow three simple rules will be on their way to winning the battle against these amputations. 1) get regular foot exams 2) control glucose levels 3) learn foot care.

Praise For New Edition

They started singing to get attention from the girls. But New Edition ended up making music history. After 25 years of peaks and valleys, the fellas from Boston, who paved the way for modern-day boy bands like New Kids on the Block, Boyz II Men, the Backstreet Boys and ’N Sync, received their first major music industry honor. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) recently presented them with the prestigious ASCAP Golden Note Award, given to songwriters, composers and artists who have achieved extraordinary career milestones.

Newsmakers: Venus And Serena No-Shows At The Polls

Tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams definitely have their say on the tennis courts, but not so much at the ballot box. In fact, they don’t even vote! It’s not that they have no interest in American politics; it’s because of their religion. “I’m a Jehovah’s Witness, so I don’t get involved in politics,” Serena explains. “We stay neutral. We don’t vote.”

Black History Quiz

A native of Brooklyn and cum laude graduate from Brooklyn College, this political dynamo carved out her own chapter in American political history and became the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress. And 36 years ago this week she became the first Black to campaign for the U.S. presidency within the two-party system. She chronicled her spectacular political career in the autobiography Unbought and Unbossed and died at the age of 80 in 2005.
