The Turntable Podcast: Seal
2008-11-13
Episode 26: Seal
Seal Henry Olusegun Kwassi Olumide Adelo Samuel got his start singing in pubs in inner London. In 1980, the kid with the Nigerian mother and Brazilian father left his day job in architecture behind and took off to tour Japan with the British funk band, Push. By the time he returned to England several years later, he had separated from Push, joined a blues band in Thailand and journeyed through India on his own.
Back in London, the singer came to the attention of producer Adamski who featured Seal's vocals on the single “Killer,” which reached number one in 1990 in the UK. One year later, he released his debut album, Seal. The single “Crazy” put him over the top and made him a household name in the States. His 1996, “Kiss From A Rose,” won a Grammy for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Seal has gone on to release a new album about every two years, his style ranging from club music to French pop duets (sung in French) to German lullabies (sung in German) to dance tunes. He has always shown a penchant for reworking classic hits including Queen’s “We Are the Champions,” the Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” and Burt Bacharach’s “Walk on By.” The release of Soul (Warner Bros), his sixth studio album, marks his first major project in that direction and includes eleven soul classics produced by the legendary David Foster.
Listen in as Seal talks about his tribute to the all time greatest soul classics and the musical influences in his life. As one of the greatest singers of our generation, Seal is back with plenty of soul.
