Lowell Police Department launches body camera pilot program

The Lowell Police Department announced the launch of a body camera pilot program on Wednesday ahead of an expected rollout for the entire police department next year. The initial program will equip 30 officers with body cameras across police shifts. An additional 215 cameras will go into service with the launch for the rest of the department. Interim Lowell Police Superintendent Barry Golner thanked those involved in helping launch the program in a statement, saying the program “will ensure transparency and continue to build public trust.”“This will allow us to show the public we serve that our officers perform their duties with the highest degree of integrity and professionalism,” Golner said.

Aztecs men's basketball to be celebrated at Snapdragon Stadium

SAN DIEGO -- Snapdragon Stadium will host a celebration to honor San Diego State University men's basketball team's historic March Madness run, the school's sports department said.The free event is scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m., according to SDSU. Parking will open at 4:30 p.m., stadium gates at 6 p.m. and a red carpet arrival for the Aztecs at 6:30 p.m.The team will then make their way into the stadium starting from the roundabout in the southeast side of the parking lots to inside the east gate, officials said.A maximum of six free tickets must be claimed in advance. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A U.S. federal court on Wednesday denied an appeal by former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo Manrique to stop his extradition to his native country to face charges he accepted millions of dollars in bribes as part of a mammoth corruption scandal involving officials across Latin America.Toledo, 77, had filed for a stay on his extradition pending a legal challenge to the U.S. State Department’s decision to send him back to Peru, where he is accused of taking $20 million in bribes from Odebrecht, a giant Brazilian construction company that has admitted to U.S. authorities that it bribed officials to win contracts throughout the region.U.S. officials said the U.S. Marshals Service would move to turn Toledo, who was Peru’s president in 2001-2006, over to Peruvian authorities. Save A Lot opening in Englewood postponed after protests

CHICAGO — Plans to open a new Save A Lot where the old Whole Foods in Englewood was located are on hold after dozens of residents protested against the store's opening. The store off of 63rd Street was expected to open Thursday, but after residents came out Wednesday night expressing their opposition, the opening date has been pushed back. Whole Foods in Englewood to close in November Some local residents said they weren't invited to a soft opening scheduled for Wednesday night. Since Whole Foods closed in November, several residents have shared the type of grocery store they want to see in its place. They said Save A Lot is not it.
