The Miami Dolphins presented a generous gift to a South Florida medical center dedicated to fight cancer.The football team has raised millions of dollars to challenge cancer in hopes of bringing more resources and research for the disease.The motto for the Dolphins Challenge Cancer initiative is simple.“That’s our goal: one team, one fight to make sure that our community fights cancer together but also has more positive outcomes,” said Javier Sanchez, executive director of Dolphins Challenge Cancer.During the Dolphins’ game against the New York Giants on Sunday, Dolphins Challenge Cancer made a record-breaking presentation to the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.“Raising $10 million was not an easy feat. The Gloucester Police and Fire Departments rescued two women Sunday morning after they were washed off the Dog Bar breakwater in Gloucester Harbor, officials said.Crews responded to a 10:45 a.m. report that two women had washed off the breakwater, which extends out from Eastern Point Lighthouse in Gloucester’s outer harbor, according to a statement issued by Police Chief Edward Conley and Fire Chief Eric Smith.Officers and firefighters climbed 12 feet down the side of the granite breakwater to reach the women, both whom were in their 20s, and some used their bodies to shield the women from several direct impacts as the waves crashed against the breakwater. Aside from a slight chance of showers Tuesday, the region should see clear but seasonally chilly weather through most of the week — but there is potential rain in the weekend forecast, according to the National Weather Service.The last vestiges of Tropical Storm Philippe passing through Maine this weekend will leave a chance of rain in its wake, according to Allan Dunham, a meteorologist with the NWS.“It’s a weak cold front extending from (Philippe),” Dunham said. Gavin Newsom rejected a bill on Sunday that would have made free condoms available all public high school students, arguing it was too expensive for a state with a budget deficit of more than $30 billion.California had about 1.9 million high school students enrolled in more than 4,000 schools last year, according to the California Department of Education.“This bill would create an unfunded mandate to public schools that should be considered in the annual budget process,” Newsom wrote in a message explaining why he vetoed the bill, known as Senate bill 541.The bill would have required all public schools that have grades nine through 12 to make condoms available for free to all students.
