Man who robbed same bank twice sentenced in federal court

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- A man was sentenced in federal court Tuesday for robbing two credit unions in San Diego County last year. Akil Saeed Daniels, 41, will serve 110 months behind bars after holding up a California Coast Credit Union in Chula Vista and Mission Federal Credit Union in Poway.An interesting twist to the crime spree -- these robberies occurred just months after Daniels was released from a long stint in prison for robbing the very same Chula Vista credit union more than a decade earlier, said U.S. attorney Randy Grossman's office. NEW YORK (AP) — A writer suing Donald Trump took the stand Wednesday to tell jurors that the future president raped her after she accompanied him into a department store fitting room in 1996.“I’m here because Donald Trump raped me, and when I wrote about it, he said it didn’t happen. He lied and shattered my reputation, and I’m here to try and get my life back,” she testified.Trump denies E. Jean Carroll’s allegations. TORONTO — Rogers Communications Inc. is partnering with SpaceX and Lynk Global to deliver satellite-to-phone connectivity across Canada and bolster coverage in remote regions.The Toronto-based company says the moves are aimed at widening coverage for Rogers customers in areas that aren’t served by traditional wireless networks.Rogers and SpaceX plan to use the latter’s Starlink low-earth orbit satellites and Rogers’ national wireless spectrum to offer satellite-to-phone technology in Canada. The companies plan to start with satellite coverage for SMS text and will eventually provide voice and data access across areas such as national parks and rural highways that are currently unconnected.Starlink aims to offer broadband internet in areas where connections tend to be unreliable, expensive or unavailable. In December, SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk tweeted that “Starlink works in even the most remote regions of Antarctica.”Musk has also previously tweeted that Canada “is a major pr...

TORONTO — Strength in technology and base metal stocks helped Canada’s main stock index climb higher in late-morning trading, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.The S&P/TSX composite index was up 35.07 points at 20,474.94.In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 15.64 points at 33,515.19. Canada Infrastructure Bank loaning $220M to Flo for EV charging network expansion

TORONTO — Electric vehicle drivers can expect more charging options ahead as the Canada Infrastructure Bank is loaning $220 million to Flo Services Inc. to expand its network.The Infrastructure Bank says the loan will allow Montreal-based Flo to install more than 2,000 charging ports, nearly doubling the number of universal public fast charging ports available in Canada.The loan is the first from the Infrastructure Bank’s $500 million fund designed specifically to increase EV charging and hydrogen refuelling options.Flo will own and operate the network that will mostly use its own dual-port, 320 kilowatt chargers designed to bring most EV batteries to an 80 per cent charge in 15 minutes.The chargers are expected to be installed within four years at about 400 sites across Canada.Investments in charging networks come as the government is also mandating that at least 60 per cent of vehicle sales be electric by 2030 and 100 per cent by 2035.This report by The Canadian Press was fi...

York Regional Police are searching for a male Uber driver that allegedly sexually assaulted a female passenger in Vaughan and stole her phone to leave him a good review on the app.Authorities say the suspect was working as an Uber driver in a white 2021 Toyota Corolla on April 23 when he picked up an adult woman in the Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue area in Toronto to transport her to Vaughan.The Uber driver allegedly pulled over into a parking lot in the Rutherford Road and Weston Road area in Vaughan, where he sexually assaulted the woman.Police said the male driver then took the victim’s phone, concluded the trip on the Uber app and gave himself a five-star review and a monetary tip.The woman got her phone back and exited the vehicle. Australian coal company withdraws plan for mine in Alberta foothills

An Australian coal company is withdrawing its plan for a mine in the Crowsnest Pass region of the eastern slopes of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains.In a letter, Montem Resources is asking the Alberta Energy Regulator to end the environmental impact assessment for its Tent Mountain proposal.The letter says the company will not be resuming mining for metallurgical coal at the site, which last operated in 1983.  CEO Peter Doyle says the company will instead be focusing efforts on building a renewable hydro project at the site. In February, Montem announced a deal with TransAlta in which the utility would acquire a 50 per cent interest in the plan to combine wind and hydro to generate renewable electricity. Doyle says a final decision on whether to proceed with the renewable energy plan will come in 2025. This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 26, 2023.The Canadian Press
