BUSAN, South Korea (AP) — Tropical Storm Khanun was pouring intense rain on South Korea on Thursday, turning roads into chocolate-colored rivers as it advanced north toward major urban centers near the capital.More than a foot of rain has already fallen in southern areas from the storm that made landfall on the mainland during the morning. Emergency workers were responding to growing reports of flooding and landslides by afternoon. More than 10,000 people, mostly in southern coastal areas, were forced to evacuate from their homes and the number was expected to grow as the heavy rains continue and rivers and streams rise.No storm-related deaths or injuries have been reported so far, according to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. TOKYO (AP) — Asian benchmarks mostly fell Thursday after shares declined on Wall Street and investors braced for a highly anticipated United States inflation report.Later in the day, the U.S. government will give its monthly update on the inflation that consumers are experiencing. Economists expect to see an acceleration to 3.3% in July from 3% in June. Tina Teng, markets analyst at CMC Markets, called the looming update “a pivotal event for global markets.” Inflation in China also remains a huge concern. “A slowdown in consumer spending and high-interest rates remain issues for the global economy,” said Teng. Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 added 0.8% to finish at 32,473.65. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 added 0.3% to 7,357.40. South Korea’s Kospi lost 0.3% to 2,596.62. Hawaiian wildfires delay flight to British Columbia

Some Canadians vacationing in Hawaii saw their flight home with Air Canada cancelled, as parts of the island of Maui were being scorched by a devastating wildfire.A statement from the air carrier said the most recent scheduled flight from Maui to Vancouver was cancelled as access to the airport was closed. It also said a larger, and empty, plane lifted off from Vancouver Wednesday evening, bound for the island, to pick up the stranded passengers and those booked on the next regularly scheduled flight.The company added that it is continuing to monitor the situation, with regular daily flights between Vancouver and Maui still scheduled. The European Commission has approved, under EU state aid rules, a €16 million Bulgarian measure to support the expansion of Bulgartranstaz's natural gas storage facility in Chiren.Bulgartranstaz decided to invest approximately €285 million to expand the capacity of its natural gas storage plant in Chiren, which is the only natural gas storage facility in Bulgaria. The storage capacity of the facility is expected to increase from 550 million to 1 billion cubic meters. Moreover, the capacities for withdrawal and injection of natural gas in the grid will also be increased.Bulgaria notified to the Commission its plans to support Bulgartransgaz's investment with a nine-year €16 million public guarantee on the loan to finance the measure. ‘Road Shark’ campaign in Fairfax Co. bites nearly 25,000 drivers for unsafe driving

In March, Fairfax County Police and Virginia State Police teamed up to put a focus on catching motorists driving dangerously in the county.
